Geography

At our school, Geography is taught through the CUSP curriculum, which is carefully designed to help pupils develop a deep understanding of the world around them.

The curriculum is organised so that knowledge builds over time. Key concepts are revisited throughout the school, enabling pupils to strengthen their understanding and commit important learning to their long-term memory.

Pupils develop both what they know and how they think as geographers. They learn substantive knowledge, including key ideas linked to human and physical geography, alongside disciplinary knowledge, such as using maps, understanding scale and interpreting geographical information.

The curriculum is carefully sequenced to ensure that learning builds cumulatively. Prior learning is revisited and extended, helping pupils to make meaningful connections between different topics and develop a coherent understanding of geography.

Each unit is centred around a clear learning question, which helps pupils to understand the purpose of their learning. Lessons are broken down into small, manageable steps, supporting pupils to build confidence and deepen their understanding over time.

Vocabulary is a key focus. Pupils are explicitly taught subject-specific language so that they can explain their ideas clearly and engage in thoughtful geographical discussion.

Lessons follow a consistent structure, helping all pupils to access the learning. Knowledge organisers and visual supports help children to remember key information, while regular retrieval practice ensures that knowledge is retained.

Pupils are given opportunities to think critically about the world, exploring how places are connected and how humans interact with their environment. They develop an understanding of important global issues and their role within the wider world.

Our aim is to develop curious, informed and responsible geographers who understand the relationships between people and the environment, and who are prepared to engage thoughtfully with the challenges of the future.
